Idogawa is the only mayor in Fukushima who made a decision to evacuate the residents of Futaba town immediately after the earthquake and tsunami, while other mayors waited for a suggestion from the authority. He also spoke at an information meeting at the UN Geneva headquarters in October 2012 and begged the international authorities to help evacuate the residence of Fukushima including 300,000 children still living in the highly contaminated areas.
Now, mayor Idogawa is accused by the municipal assembly for causing “confusion among town residents” since the policy of Japanese government for the recovery of Fukushima Prefecture has focused on “decontamination” work rather than “evacuation” of population. Moreover, three out of eight members of the assembly are deemed to be influenced by TEPCO (Tokyo Electricity Company) or other related companies. In response to this no-confidence motion, the mayor has the right to resign or dissolve the town assembly within 10 days under the Local Autonomy Law.
